Ethics

Child Likeness and the Future Adult

Creating a digital avatar or voice clone of a minor implicates a person who cannot yet consent and will have to live with the artifact as an adult.

Three positions

Position 1

Prohibition

No clones of minors for any purpose. The risk to the future adult outweighs any short-term benefit.

Position 2

Strict parental consent + sunset

Permitted with parental consent only, with automatic destruction at age 18 unless the now-adult opts in.

Position 3

Educational-only carve-out

Voice and avatar clones are permitted only for clearly bounded educational uses with no public distribution.

Best practices

  • Treat child likenesses as a categorically higher bar.
  • Automatic destruction at majority is the responsible default.
  • No commercial distribution under any circumstances.
