AI Video Avatars

How AI video avatars are produced, what they can convincingly do today, and the seams that still give them away on a careful second viewing.

01Production pipeline

A modern AI video avatar starts with a capture session: hours of footage in controlled lighting, varied expressions, and a wide range of speech. The model then learns a personal representation that can be re-rendered from any new script.

Lip sync, micro-expression, and prosody have improved dramatically since 2023. They are no longer the dead giveaway they used to be.

02What still gives them away

Hands, hair edges, jewelry, and rapid head turns remain the hardest things to render reliably. Eye contact under prolonged scrutiny is also a tell — most avatars do not yet fixate naturally.

These artifacts are shrinking with each model generation. The window in which a careful viewer can spot a high-end avatar is closing.

03Where they belong

Avatars work best where the content is informational, the delivery is consistent, and the production cost of a human shoot is the binding constraint: localized training videos, internal updates, knowledge base explainers, scalable marketing.

They are weaker where the content depends on warmth, surprise, or unrehearsed emotion.
